About our guests:
Raenel is a Stage IIB Triple Negative Breast cancer survivor hailing from the suburban town of Frederick, Maryland but has resided in Houston, TX since 2015. Little did she know, shortly after receiving a job offer in the healthcare field, she would be diagnosed with “the bug in her boob.” Raenel’s natural curiosity, “why”mentality or as her dad likes to call her “Nancy Drew” personality would soon prove to be invaluable in her cancer journey. As an analyst by trade, the drive to explore and thoroughly research options served her well. Whether it was the fertility preservation process or choosing to successfully endure scalp cooling, she made sure she was an active participant in hertreatment decisions.
You are your biggest advocate! If something doesn’t make sense or you feel right, there might be a better option. Feel empowered to speak up. You are a partner in your treatment journey and your voice deserves to be heard! Fun fact: If you give Raenel “good” ranch, a Stevie Wonder or Bruno Mars playlist, you will be her best friend.Find Rae on Instagram at @Raeelisse and @Raenandraenbows and on Facebook as Raenel Smedley

About our guests:
Marissa, a dynamic Woman of Color and a visionary leader, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the tender age of 35. This life-altering moment led her to co-found “For the Breast of Us” in May 2019, alongside Jasmine Souers, another resilient breast cancer survivor. Their mission was clear: to craft a sanctuary where women of color battling breast cancer could find resources that speak directly to them, shared by voices they could relate to. Marissa is the co-founder and CEO at For the Breast of Us.
Veronica, a resilient woman from San Antonio, Texas, was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma (stage 2b) in January 2020. Being ERPR positive and HER2 negative, she opted for a single mastectomy and underwent active treatment amidst the challenging peak of the pandemic. Battling through a year marked by isolation, she sought reconstruction options and chose an aesthetic flat closure. Her decision was notably influenced by support from the community of For the Breast of Us and the empowering connections made with other flatty baddies. Veronica is a Baddie Ambassador with For the Breast of Us.

Deb Ontiveros is originally from Los Angeles but resides in Southern Utah. She is a Spanish/English Interpreter & Translator. Deb was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in April 2018. She spends her extra time advocating for breast cancer and mental health issues.
Deb's journey with cancer began with a decision to delay conventional treatment to explore natural remedies. When those alternatives didn't yield results, she turned to scientific medical treatment and experienced five years of good health. However, a year ago, Deb sensed something was wrong and subsequent scans revealed two new tumors. Initially suspecting cancer progression, a biopsy revealed it was actually a new diagnosis of hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. Despite these challenges, Deb continues to navigate her health journey with resilience and determination.

LaDonna Lewis a native of Richmond, VA, has dealt with breast cancer and its effects since losing her mother at the age of 10 after her second battle with breast cancer. Breast cancer claimed the lives of others in her family to include her aunts and even her grandfather but she was also able to see through one of her aunts that cancer wasn't a death sentence.
In 2011 at the age 23, she found out she was BRCA1+ and in June 2015 at 27, she was diagnosed with Stage 1 triple negative breast cancer. Her journey consisted of a double mastectomy and 6 months of chemotherapy. She vowed that her moms life and her battle wouldn’t be in vain and immediatelybecame an advocate for young women that were not only battling the disease, but to advocate when something wasn’t right with their bodies. She has spearheaded two fundraisers for young women battling cancer, most recently hosting “A Pink Christmas” to help a mother make Christmas happen while she is in treatment.
As of April 2024, she is the founder of “A Pink Christmas Foundation” who’s mission is to support women battling cancer & their families, with a focus on young women battling breast cancer. LaDonna’s goal is to leave an impact on her community and to let other women know that they are not alone in the fight & that we must always advocate for ourselves until somebody hears.

Dr. Stacey Kernisan is a distinguished individual with a multifaceted background. She is a wife and mother to two children, aged 11 and 6, respectively. Additionally, she serves as President of her sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Gamma Alpha Eta Zeta Chapter, demonstrating her commitment to community engagement and leadership.
Her professional journey encompasses many experiences, including working with at-risk youth in residential settings and individuals with disabilities, collaborating with government contractors in training and development, and participating in higher education initiatives. Dr. Kernisan pursued her undergraduate studies at Virginia Tech and recently attained her Doctor of Education in Adult Learning and Development from Northwestern State University of Louisiana.
Despite her significant achievements, Dr. Kernisan faced a formidable challenge when diagnosed with Stage 2 Breast Cancer/Triple Positive. The discovery of the lump during her routine self-examination while breastfeeding her daughter initially led her to believe it was a benign issue. However, subsequent medical evaluation confirmed the diagnosis, prompting her to undergo eight rounds of chemotherapy followed by a double mastectomy with reconstruction. She then underwent a regimen of Herceptin for a year and five years of Tamoxifen treatment.
Today, Dr. Kernisan stands as a beacon of resilience, having achieved no evidence of disease status. She remains dedicated to advocating for regular self-examinations as a means of early detection and continues to raise awareness about breast cancer within her community and beyond.
